Other Bastide towns.
Each of these towns is very individual in its style and design, however the main similarity is a central fortified town square, usually surrounded with covered side walks under massively built arches. In general all the roads connecting these roads are very straight.
Monflanquin - 13km to the south or Villereal. Built on the top of a hill with outstanding views in all directions, it is one of the most popular with the English. Very little in the way of shopping but a few superb restaurants all overlooking the square.
Monpazier - to the east of Ste Sabine, although accessible "over the hills" it is much easier to go via Villereal. A larger town with a lovely square and a series of medieval streets with small smart shops and restaurants. Can be fun to browse on Sunday as the shops unusually are open prior to lunch in the square.
Beaumont - 9 km to the North of Ste Sabine towards the River
Castillonnes - 15km to the west of Villereal
Issigeac - Very beautiful small town about 13km to the west of Ste Sabine, excellent Boulangerie, small supermarket, bars and Chez Alain - a must (book in season) for alfresco on a warm summer evening or inside their pretty restaurant in the autumn.
On the river to the north, places worthy of a visit are Lalinde (walks along the canalised section of the Dordogne), Limeuil - where the Dordogne and Bezere rivers meet.
Bergerac - a pretty riverside town (small city) with quaint old sector, a good mix of restaurants and shops. Trips on the river.
Other local attractions :
Extensive walking both by the River and on the rural Randonnes Cycling (hire in Villereal) on the quiet (mostly level) roads and lanes Canoe hire on the Dordogne and other rivers
Further afield - a day trip - are the town of
Perigueux - a large town with delightful architechture, a good range of shops and restaurants
Les Eyzies - the centre of activity for pre-historic man, extensive cave dwellings, a museum and a pretty setting on the Vezere river
Rocamadour - famous for it Pilgrims. A large village built on the side of a tall cliff, impressive and interesting. A little touristy but well worth the trip.
